Preparing for Hip Replacement Surgery: A Practical Checklist
The operation itself is only part of the story. How well the first fortnight at home goes usually comes down to what you sorted out beforehand. None of it is complicated, but it is easy to leave until the last minute.
Get the house ready
You will be moving carefully for a few weeks, so make the things you use every day easy to reach.
- Clear a wide, trip-free path between the bed, bathroom and a comfortable chair.
- Move everyday items to waist height so you are not bending low or reaching high.
- Sort out a firm chair with armrests — low, soft sofas are hard to get out of early on.
Build up your strength first
Going into surgery stronger genuinely shortens recovery. In the weeks before, keep moving within comfort — short walks, gentle range-of-motion work, and any exercises your physiotherapist has given you. Stopping smoking, even for a few weeks, measurably improves healing.
Arrange your support
Line up someone to be around for the first few days, and plan how you will get to and from the clinic. Fill any prescriptions in advance and keep a simple record of your medicines.
Bring your questions to your pre-operative appointment — the more clearly you understand the plan, the more in control the whole process feels.
